It's like a drunken painter's rendition of Greta Garbo

I don’t think Bowie ever topped this one. He’s a musical tyrant, and this album is his goaded horse. It’s a sweeping vista of Nietzsche-inspired pet conceits and epic spontaneity. Some describe it as “chamber pop.” That seems to fit. I imagine Bowie locking his band in a chamber with himself and not letting anybody out until everybody was hunky dory.
